Wednesday's state championship series recaps

Class 6A Championship Series
G1: Heritage-Conyers 7, Pope 2
G2: Pope 11, Heritage-Conyers 1

Heritage overcame a two-run first-inning deficit to defeat Pope 7-2 in Game 1 of the best-of-three Class 6A state championship series Wednesday night at Rome's State Mutual Stadium.

But Pope run-ruled the Patriots in Game 2 to force a decisive third game Thursday afternoon at 6 p.m. The two-time defending state champion Greyhounds (32-10) are seeking to join 2019 Class 5A state champion Loganville as the first two teams since Columbus High (2010-12) to win three consecutive state baseball titles.

In Game 1, Heritage pitcher Griffin Holcombe spotted Pope a 2-0 advantage in the first inning, then the senior pitched six scoreless innings the rest of the way to earn the complete-game victory. He allowed two runs on six hits.

Nolan Woodward led the Patriots (30-8) at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles. Darryl Buggs had a two-run triple, while Christian Davis had a two-run single.

Pope's Buddy Floyd had two hits in the loss.

But Pope jumped all over Heritage in the nightcap. Floyd went 3-for-3 with two triples and four RBIs to lead the Greyhounds at the plate. Ian Hancock added two hits and pitcher Gage Vailes shut down the Heritage offense.

Davis went 2-for-3 to lead the Patriots, who are seeking their first state title in school history.

Class 2A Championship Series
G3:
Jeff Davis 2, Rockmart 0

After the two teams split a pair of games on Monday at Macon's Luther Williams Field, Jeff Davis scored just enough runs to capture the Class 2A state championship series.

It is the second title in three seasons for Jeff Davis (31-7), who swept Elbert County in the 2017 Class 2A championship series.

Hamp Hayes' RBI single in the third inning scored Britt Metts for the game's first run, then Caleb Chaney's RBI single in the sixth scored Caleb Leggett to give Jeff Davis an insurance run.

Metts then needed just eight pitches to retire Rockmart in the top of the seventh to earn the save in relief of starter Garrison Miles, who allowed just four hits in six innings on the mound.

Chaney led the Jeff Davis offense by going 2-for-3.

Rockmart, playing in its first state championship series, ended its season at 29-11.

Class 1A Public Championship Series
G1:
Gordon Lee 9, Schley County 3

After splitting the first two games of the best-of-three Class 1A Public state championship series on Monday, Gordon Lee rolled past Schley County Wednesday afternoon at Grayson Stadium in Savannah to win its second straight state title.

It was the third straight appearance in the state championship series for the Trojans, who lost to Schley County in the 2017 Class 1A Public state championship series.

The Trojans (32-5) fell behind against Schley County (29-7) by a run in the first inning on Wednesday, but Gordon Lee rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the first to grab the lead for good. It was the fourth title in school history for the Trojans.

Gordon Lee also joined Schley County and Charlton County as the only baseball programs in the Georgia High School Association to win two or more

Class 1A Public state baseball titles since Class 1A split into a public and private division in 2013.
